The nine fire brigade units in Co Waterford responded to a total of 54 call-outs in January alone.

Chief Fire Officer Capt Michael Hession said there was one “exceptional even” during January – the fire in Ballinroad Church on New Year’s Day.

Tramore Fire Brigade responded to 13 calls and Dungarvan had 12 calls in January. Turnout areas and operations in Clonmel and Carrick-on-Suir, South Tipperary, have been reviewed.

The Chief Fire Officer said that the priority for Civil Defence force in Waterford in 2011 is to further invigorate and support the development of civil defence in the county and build on the positive experiences of last year’s severe weather responses.
