The extent of the difficulties facing hundreds of homeowners in Waterford has been illustrated by the increase in mortgage interest supplement recipients across the city and county.
In response to a pre-Christmas Dáil question to Social Protection Minister Eamon Ó Cuív, Fine Gael Deputy John Deasy said the figures revealed to him made for worrying reading.
“To say there’s been a dramatic increase in mortgage interest supplement payments in Waterford over the past few years is putting it mildly,” said Deputy Deasy.
“In 2005 there were 68 recipients of mortgage interest supplement.  That figure rose to 229 in 2008. But as of December 12th, 2010, the figure was 497.”
For the record, the year-on-year increase reads: 2005 – 68; 2006 – 76; 2007 – 91; 2008 – 229; 2009-438; 2010 – 497.
