Gardaí who stopped a man driving in Waterford discovered he was in possession of almost €2,000 worth of cocaine, a bag of cannabis and a knife.
Dylan McCormick (26) of 20 Cul Rua, Brown Street, Portlaw, Waterford, appeared before Judge John Cheatle at a sitting of Waterford District Court last month via video link from prison, where he is currently serving a sentence for unrelated matters.
He pleaded guilty to charges of possession of cannabis and cocaine for personal use, contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977, as well as possession of cocaine for unlawful sale and/or supply, contrary to Section 15 of the same act, and possession of a knife, contrary to Section 9 of the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990.
Sergeant John Phelan told the court on 27 November, 2024, Gardaí stopped a man who was driving in the Waterside area of Waterford city shortly after midnight.
Gardaí spoke to the man, who was identified as the accused, and they conducted a search of his vehicle.
The Sergeant outlined that 27.8g of cocaine, worth €1,946, a bag of cannabis worth €20 and a 7.5 inch knife was found in the accused’s possession following the search. He was subsequently arrested by Gardaí, and told them that he was “trying to make a bit of extra cash” when interviewed.
It was noted in court that he has four previous convictions.
Acting for the defendant, solicitor Ken Cunningham said that it was not a “targeted search” and that a follow up search of his house by Gardaí was “negative” and did not lead to any further discovery.
Mr. Cunningham said his client has been in custody since October 2025, and asked Judge Cheatle if the charges could be dealt with in such a way as to not interfere with the release date of the sentence he is currently serving out.
Judge Cheatle handed the accused a six month prison sentence, backdated to when he first entered custody in October 2025.
The Judge also made a destruction order for the drugs and knife.
