One of the basic rights which all people are believed to be entitled to is a sense of safety and security in their own homes.
Sadly, new proposals apparently being considered by the Government may place this belief in jeopardy.
Reports last week suggested that many rural Garda stations across the country could be set for closure following December’s budget.
Chief Superintendents have been asked to examine the ‘operational effectiveness’ of stations and to draw up a list of stations that could be closed.
It’s believed around 200 stations could face the chop, most likely to be those that manned by single officers in rural areas.
With an embargo in place on the recruitment of new members into the force, and retirement numbers increasing, the future manpower of An Garda Síochána is being called into question.
