A man who was driving in Kilkenny with an NCT certificate that had expired by almost a year was recently handed a court fine.

Alan Murnane (35) of Ballickmoyler Road, Graiguecullen, Carlow, made no appearance at a sitting of Waterford District Court earlier this month, where he was charged with driving without a valid NCT certificate, contrary to Section 18 (1) and (2) of the Road Traffic Act, 1961.

The court heard that Gardaí stopped a vehicle on the R448 road at Newrath, Kilkenny, on 11 July 2025. The driver of the vehicle was identified as the accused, and after speaking to him, Gardaí discovered that his NCT certificate had expired by 11 months. A fixed charge penalty that was issued to the accused by Gardaí subsequently went unpaid.

Judge Kevin Staunton decided to convict the accused of the offence in his absence, and handed him a €400 fine.
