A man who appeared in court last month after hitting an electricity pole with his car in Waterford was handed a fine.

Liam Kelly (38) of 22 Skibbereen Road, Lismore Lawn, Waterford, appeared at a February sitting of Waterford District Court before Judge Peter White, where he was charged with a hit and run after his vehicle hit an ESB pole last year.

Sergeant Micheal Hickey told the court on 4 February, 2025, Gardaí were alerted after a resident of Pearse Park housing estate in Waterford was awoken by a ‘bang’ at around 2.00 am. Sgt. Hickey outlined that a car had reversed into an ESB pole in the estate, and something fell and hit the windscreen. The accused was identified as the driver of the car.

The court heard that no complaint was made by ESB about the incident, it was only the accused’s car that was damaged, and that he has no previous convictions.

Acting on behalf of the defendant, solicitor Ken Cunningham highlighted that this client was pleading guilty, has no previous convictions and was “anxious to avoid a conviction.”

Judge White acknowledged that the accused pleaded guilty at an early opportunity, and was “out of pocket” from the incident as a result of the damage done to his own car.

Taking this into account, the Judge decided to hand the accused a €300 fine for the matter.
