Waterford Gardai stopped a number of speeding drivers over the Christmas period, as part of a national road safety campaign.

An Garda Síochana began a dedicated road traffic enforcement operation on Monday 1 December, which will continue up to last Monday 5 January. This included an increased Garda presence on roads to detect drink and drug drivers, as well as preventing offences such as speeding, mobile phone use and non-wearing of seat belts.

Across the week of Monday 15 to Sunday 21 December, a total of 5,400 people were detected speeding by Gardai across Ireland, with a Waterford driver found to be going at one of the highest speeds.

The motorist was caught driving at a speed of 192km an hour in a 100km/h zone on the N25 in Kilmeaden.

A National ‘#Slowdown’Day was also conducted by Gardai on Tuesday 23 December as part of the campaign. Waterford Gardai shared on social media that a number of speeding detections were made around the Fenor and Ballinamona areas as part of the operation.

The post read: “Tramore Gardaí are out and about as part of National #slowdown day. This morning a number of speeding detections were made around Fenor and Ballinamona. Please remember to slow down and keep everyone safe on Waterford roads this Christmas.”
