Ideally, Hanover Street in Waterford City would get a new food offering which could combine with the old Munster Express building and become a plaza, that’s according to representatives for Waterford Council speaking at the meeting for the Metropolitan District in February.

Sinn Fein Cllr., Jim Griffin, asked for attention to be brought to Hanover Street saying, “it is a lovely public realm area and we should make more of it, especially with the beautiful architecture of SETU there.”

Speaking on behalf of the Council, Clare Hartley agreed, and confirmed that works were due to begin on the Munster Express building this year.

“I agree with you the Hanover Street area is quiet a pretty area of the city and certainly the works for the Munster Express which are due to be on site this year, are part of the overall cultural quarter plan for the area.

Later, during a presentation on the Cultural Quarter, Independent Cllr. Joe Kelly raised the issue of The Granary’s recent closure, highlighting it as a loss, as few other restaurants offer sit down options during day time in the area.

In response a Council representative said they hoped the Granary would come to be replaced by another food option and that this new option could connect with the Munster Express building.

“In terms of the business activity, we would hope the [former] Granary would have a food offering and that it would reopen as some kind of a food area. It would be brilliant to pull them back into a plaza when The Munster Express building is working.

“It was always planned that the two buildings would create a really nice thoroughfare there that the café and the new Munster Express building would work hand in hand.”
