Waterford District Court recently heard a case of alleged sexual assault by a man in the city almost two years ago.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Judge Kevin Staunton at a recent in-camera (closed to public) court sitting, charged with sexual assault, contrary to Section 2 of the Criminal Law (Rape) (Amendment) Act, 1990.
Sergeant John Phelan told the court that in summer 2024, the injured party reported to Gardaí that they had allegedly been sexually assaulted while they were travelling in a vehicle in Waterford city.
Judge Staunton decided to accept jurisdiction in the case, which means it will be heard at the District Court. The Judge remanded the accused on continuing bail until May 2026, when the case will be mentioned again.
