A young man who was ‘aggressive’ to bouncers while on a night out in Waterford city was recently ordered to make a court poor box donation.
Callum O’Brien (24) of Killone, Dunhill, Co.Waterford, appeared before Judge John Cheatle at a sitting of Waterford District Court last week, and pleaded guilty to being intoxicated and engaging in abusive behaviour in public, contrary to Sections 4 and 6 of the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act, 1994, which related to an incident that occurred on 18 November 2025.
The court heard that on that night, Gardaí were called to John Street, Waterford city after 1:00am, following reports of a man who was “extremely intoxicated” and had shown “aggressive behaviour” to bouncers at late-night pub Kazbar. Sergeant John Phelan later confirmed to Judge Cheatle that the accused also acted aggressively towards Gardaí following their arrival.
Acting for the accused, solicitor Ken Cunningham highlighted that his client, who is a trainee electrician, has no previous convictions and pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity. The solicitor added that the accused is anxious to avoid a conviction and apologies to Gardaí for the incident.
Judge John Cheatle decided to put the matter back to 19 May 2026, and invited the accused to make a €150 donation to the court poor box before then. The Judge indicated that the matter would be struck out if this is completed before that date, and if the accused comes to no further Garda attention.
However, Judge Cheatle also warned the defendant: “If you get into trouble again, you might not get the benefit of a strike out.”
