Labour TD, Brian O’Shea.

The shock announcement this week by Labour TD, Brian O’Shea, that he would not be contesting the general election has blown the battle for seats in the Waterford constituency even more open than it already was.

Deputy O’Shea’s departure, added to the earlier retirement of FF’s Martin Cullen, means that there will be two new TDs, at least, in the four-seater constituency. The absence of the two former poll-toppers, on top of the unprecedented uncertainty created by the government’s handling of the economy and banking calamity, has resulted in a situation that is extremely hard to predict.
