FULL-time family carer William (Willie) Coleman from Kilmacthomas has been announced as Waterford’s Carer of the Year.
William was presented with his award last week by Jennie Farrell of The Carers Association as part of the National Carers of the Year Awards 2015.
William was chosen from a substantial number of nominations as Waterford’s Carer of the Year 2015.
William (63) provides full-time care for his wife Christina (58) who is confined to a wheelchair after undergoing several hip operations.
Nominations for William all cited the phenomenal care he provides to his wife and his contribution to the local community.
One nomination included a heartfelt story told by Christina of the love and care which he provides to her.
“We are delighted to be presenting this award to William who has dedicated his life to caring for his much-loved wife and family,” said Jenny Farrell, Care Support Manager of The Carers Association.
“William continues to be an inspiration to all who know him and his family and truly deserving of the accolade of Waterford’s Carer of the Year 2015.”
As Waterford’s Carers of the Year 2015, the Colemans will be guests of honour at The Carers Association’s National Carers of the Year Awards in Dublin on Wednesday, November 11th.
They will be joined by fellow regional award recipients from Dublin, Munster and Connacht / Ulster and one of them will be announced as Ireland’s Carer of the Year along with the Young Carer of the Year. The Carers of the Year Awards are kindly sponsored by Emergency Response Ltd.
“These awards are important for recognising the enormous contribution of family carers who care for their loved ones full-time in the home, often with little acknowledgement,” said Carers Association Head of Operations David Lowbridge.
“This year’s nominations highlight the commitment, courage and strength of our family carers, often in the face of very difficult circumstances.”
