The old Christian Brothers School in Tramore continues to be vandalised with little being done to prevent anti-social behaviour, the recent meeting of Waterford Metropolitan District Council was told.
For years, the residents around the old CBS site have appealed for help, as the site has become a hotbed for anti-social incidents in Tramore.
The old CBS site was vacated in 2014 when the girl’s secondary school amalgamated with the boy’s school.
The Munster Express reported on Councillor Blaise Hannigan’s appeal for help back in December 2025, when he said: “I’ve been asked by the residents next to the CBS in Tramore to bring this up. There are porta cabins on that ground at the moment. It has been closed for the past number of years”.
“It’s been broken into on a monthly basis; drinking has been observed there on a regular basis. The guards go up and down without any success, two weeks ago they set one of the portacabins on fire so that the fire brigade had to come out,” explained Cllr. Hannigan.
“So, the residents are asking, with this area set to be used by a developer in the future, could we contact the owner and ask them to remove the portacabins?”
Despite this call nothing substantial seems to have happened, and anti-social behaviour continues to plague the surrounding residents, according to Cllr. Hannigan.
Speaking at the latest meeting of Waterford Metropolitan District Council, Cllr. Hannigan said: “I spoke about the porta cabins at the Christian Brothers school in Tramore a number of months ago in relation to anti-social behaviour and fires on a regular basis”.
“On bank holiday Monday there were three fire tenders which had to go and sort out fires again in that area. I asked at the meeting previously if the Council would contact the owners to remove the porta cabins and if they don’t want to do that, then will they please put cameras in place so the Gardaí can deal with the individuals concerned?”
Cllr. Hannigan added: “This is an ongoing problem for residents”.
Hazel O'Shea, Senior Executive Planner, replied on behalf of the Council: “I will raise it again with Active Land Management,” she said. “The porta cabins are definitely on our radar, but I will raise it again”.
