A woman who had a “bit too much to drink” stole over €100 worth of jewellery from a shop in Waterford in 2024, the District Court heard.

Chanel O’Leary (23) of Grange, Broadway, Wexford, appeared before Judge Kevin Staunton at a February sitting of Waterford District Court, charged with theft contrary to Section 4 of the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act, 2001.

The court heard that on 12 October 2024, a woman, who was identified as the accused, entered the Shaw’s store on Meagher’s Quay, Waterford, and took €127.80 worth of jewellery items. The accused later admitted this to Gardaí, and all of the items were recovered. It was noted that she has no previous convictions.

Acting for the accused, solicitor Hilary Delahunty highlighted that his client was pleading guilty and had “a bit too much to drink” on the day of the offence.

Judge Staunton decided to put the matter back to 16 June 2026, to allow time for a Probation report to be completed. The Judge told the accused that it’s “important to do what they tell you to do.”
