Waterford have a tough opening to the 2016 Allianz Hurling Division 1A League as they are set to welcome All-Ireland Champions Kilkenny to Walsh Park on Saint Valentine’s Day.
Derek McGrath’s team will play three home games in this year’s league. In addition to welcoming All-Ireland Champions Kilkenny to Walsh Park they will also have Dublin and Galway at the Keane’s Road venue in the last two rounds of the 2016 competition.
In between McGrath will bring his side to Pairc Ui Rinn and Semple Stadium to play Cork and Tipperary, both of whom will be looking to impress the new management set up ahead of the Munster Championship.
Four sides from Division’s 1A and Division 1B will again contest the quarter finals in 2016 which is predetermined.
In football Waterford are again in Division Four and will be hoping for a better campaign than in 2015 where they finished third from bottom, collecting just three points from a possible fourteen and finished level on points along with Wicklow and London.
Waterford begins their campaign with a tricky assignment against Wicklow at Aughrim on January 31st.
The two sides clashed at the same stage of the competition this year at Fraher Field, a game Waterford won but playing away will prove to be a different proposition.
Waterford will have four home games in 2016 all of which will be played at Fraher Field against Louth and Wexford who have both dropped from Division three, the latter of which will be played under lights, while Tom McGlinchy’s side also have to make the long trip to Belfast to play Antrim.
