Paul Walsh scored his first goal for Waterford United on Tuesday of last week and the player who joined the club from Limerick a few months ago could not have picked a better time to get off the mark.
His 13th minute strike secured three points for the Blues and the victory moved United to within two of third-placed Sporting Fingal, with Waterford still having a game in hand.
The home side looked leg weary for long periods and there is no doubt that the effort they put in against Bohemians in the EA Sports Cup final the previous Saturday had taken its toll.
Paul Walsh was one of the two players who started the game compared to the team which started against Bohs in the League Cup decider.
Due to suspension both Graham Cummins and Kenny Browne had to sit and watch from the stand. Kevin Waters was the second player who began the game against a Longford team now managed by the former Blues manager Gareth Cronin.
This was far from a vintage display by Waterford but nevertheless the win kept their promotion push on track. United boss Stephen Henderson described the game as “horrible”. He was right but he did acknowledge that it could be one of the most valuable victories recorded so far this season. He was correct on that count also. This was the third time the Blues had defeated Longford Town during the current campaign.
