It was announced recently that a Waterford based judge has been appointed to the Circuit Criminal Court.
Judge Cephas Power, who was appointed to the District Court in February 2021, will now serve as a Circuit Court judge. Judge Power had previously lectured in law at Waterford Institute of Technology since 2005.
He obtained his Barrister-at-Law degree from King’s Inns and was appointed junior counsel in 2006. Throughout his time in the District Court, he operated as a moveable judge in different areas around Ireland.
His appointment follows both the resignation of Judge Brian P O’Shea, who presided over District Court sittings in Dungarvan and Clonmel, and the planned retirements of several District Court judges across the country.
Judges Mary Dorgan and Gerard Jones will be retiring in May 2026, with Judge Miriam Walsh set to follow in July. Judge Patricia McNamara retired from the District Court on 11 March last.
Judge Paula Murphy and Judge Alec Gabbett have also both been appointed to the Circuit Court, while eight new District Court Judges were also announced. Among them is Andrew Gubbins BL, a barrister based in Tipperary.
