Twin brothers accused of assaulting a jogger in Waterford city earlier this summer were refused bail after applying to the High Court, it has been heard.

Dale Brazil (31) of 14 Butterfield Drive, Mountneil Drive, Waterford city, and Derek Brazil (31) of 29 Knightsgrange, Lacken Road, Waterford, both appeared before Judge Kevin Staunton via video link at Waterford District Court last month. They are both charged with single counts of assault causing harm, contrary to Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

The charges related to an alleged incident that occurred on Monday 8 June at St John’s River Walk, Waterford city. A male jogger was out on the walkway that evening when he was allegedly assaulted by two men unknown to him.

The accused twin brothers were subsequently arrested and charged in relation to the alleged incident, and have been remanded in custody since 12 June.

Acting on behalf of the defendants, solicitor Ken Cunningham said that both men had been denied bail after making applications to the High Court.

Mr Cunningham requested for the two accused to be remanded in custody for four weeks for directions to be indicated in the case.

Judge Staunton remanded both defendants in custody to appear again before Waterford District Court next Tuesday 25 August via video link.
