The first raising of the Irish Tricolour, by Thomas Francis Meagher at 33 The Mall in Waterford on March 7, 1848, is to be celebrated in the city on the weekend of March 5th and 6th.
Plans for the event were launched at Monday night’s City Council meeting at which organisers voiced the hope that the celebration would become an ever-growing annual tourist attraction, taking advantage of anticipated major interest from the US and France in particular.
Brainchild of Cian Foley from Lismore Lawn and of Up the Deise website fame and Cheekpoint’s James Doherty, the purpose of the exercise is to mark the conception and unveiling of the Irish Flag by Meagher on that historic date 163 years ago.
