A Waterford man had his hip broken due to a €100 drug-related debt: that was one of several shocking revelations disclosed by a City Councillor in recent days.
Welcoming the positive response to new drug-related anti-intimidation measures, Cllr John Hearne detailed the fear that many in the city continue to live with, and acknowledged the Gardai’s role in putting several criminals “out of action”.
“I know of a case where these thugs – and that’s what we’re dealing with here, absolute and utter thugs – broke a man’s hip with bars for a €100 debt,” said Cllr Hearne, Waterford’s community representative on the local and regional Drugs Task Force.
“And I’ve been made aware of several cases were young mothers have been beaten with hammers after falling behind in payments.”
