St Saviours took the lead in this game in Ballbeg on Tuesday but not for the first time this season they could not hold their advantage and they lost three vital points to Tramore.
The previous Saturday they led Bohemians by two goals but still managed to lose. On this occasion they only had a one-goal advantage and that was not enough against a Tramore outfit that really hit form, especially in the second half. Alfie Hale is missing a number of key players in vital positions, but he will be keen to stop the habit of taking the lead and then dropping points.
St Saviours could have went in front with less than 45 seconds on the clock when Brian Arrigan whipped in a right-wing free kick into a crowded penalty area but midfielder Stephen McLawrence saw his free header hit the outside of the post before going wide.
McLawrence went close again on 11 minutes when Trevor Elliott turned provider from a right-wing free kick and when Joe Twomey flicked the ball into the path of the winger he just couldn’t direct his left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area on target.
The home side did find the breakthrough on 16 minutes when referee Andrew Mullally awarded them a corner kick despite the fact that his assistant flagged for a goal kick. But when Brian Arrigan whipped in the ball, Billy Barron powered an unstoppable header from eight yards to the back of the net.
Tramore nearly levelled the tie with their first real attack on goal after 22 minutes when the superb Stephen Grant did superbly well out on the right touchline but when his cross was met by the head of Stephen O’Shea at the back post he was denied by a magnificent save from Graham Cleary.
