Construction on Waterford city’s long-awaited new Fire Station on the Kilbarry Road is to commence before the year’s end.
Contracts for the €5.93 million project were this week awarded to the Tipperary- based Duggan Brothers (Contractors) Ltd for the new three-storey building, which will include 10 appliance bays, a dormitory, canteen, office space, a lecture theatre and a rooftop garden.
Ancillary buildings on the site will consist of community garda space, car parking and civil defence training area. The overall cost of the project is estimated to be in the region of €8 million.
Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, was in Waterford for the announcement on Monday.
He said the development will provide Waterford City Fire Service with modern facilities to prepare and respond to emergency incidents in Waterford and its hinterland, as well as deliver all its fire safety functions to the community.
