City and county politicians have queried the location of speed detecting ‘Gatso’ vans with Waterford Gardaí, suggesting that some of their positioning would appear to be prioritising profit before safety.
But this idea was rebuffed by Gardaí at the latest meeting of Waterford City Council’s Joint Policing Committee (JPC) at City Hall held last week.
“My understanding was that these vans were to be placed in locations where previous serious accidents had taken place,” said Councillor Cha O’Neill (Independent).
“Now I’ve seen these vans in the middle of the city, and I even saw one lately on the Dunmore Road where to the best of my knowledge there has never been a serious accident.”
