A man facing two charges of drugs possession was referred to the Probation Service last week.

Daryl Browne, with an address at 24 Oak Avenue, Hillview, Waterford pleaded guilty to charges including being in possession of a controlled substance (namely cannabis) contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977, and for possessing the drug for the purpose of supplying it to others, contrary to Section 15 of the same act.

At a sitting of Waterford District Court last week, it was heard that cannabis to the value of €2,400 and €180 worth of cannabis resin were discovered following a search of the defendant’s house that was carried out by Gardaí on 21 October, 2024.

Sergeant Michael Hickey told the court that the substances were discovered in the sitting room at the rear of the property. He said that the defendant has four previous convictions, with the most recent dating back to June 2014.

Solicitor Kenneth Cunningham highlighted to the court that the accused was pleading guilty to the charges and has underlying mental health issues, while also mentioning the fact that he last came to Garda attention over 11 years ago.

Judge Miriam Walsh referred the defendant to the Probation Service and put the matter back to 10 February, 2026, to allow 10-12 weeks for a probation report to be completed.
